|PROZAC NO BETTER THAN SUGAR|
Canadian and U.S. researchers recently published a comprehensive review looking at the medicinal effects of antidepressant drugs like Prozac. Their conclusion: They do not work as advertised.
What makes this review unique is that all drug data for the antidepressants Serzone, Prozac, Effexor, and Seroxat, was included. This means that clinical trials that the manufacturers did not publish were looked at. When this was done it was found that patients taking the drugs improved just as much as those taking placebo or sugar pills.
Their conclusions were striking:
"Using complete data sets (including unpublished data) and a substantially larger data set of this type than has been previously reported, we find the overall effect of new-generation antidepressant medication is below recommended criteria for clinical significance," the authors wrote. In other words, there is no significant effect with the use of these drugs.
Though not stated so clearly before there have been other studies that show that antidepressants are no better than placebo. Yet over 115 million Americans take them each year. Not all of these prescriptions are for depression. These drugs are used for off-label purposes-when the doc has nothing else to give, to quiet a complaining patient, for pain, for weight loss, etc.
Many natural therapies are known to be effective for depression-exercise, nutritional modifications, and most powerfully, homeopathy. None of these options have the side effect profile that the drugs do. And they all have a whole person effect that goes beyond just looking at one aspect of a person's health.
