|NO MORE GROWTH HORMONE IN MILK|
Starbucks recently began using only hormone-free milk in its stores. Safeway has switched its in-store brands to hormone-free milk. Kroger's grocery chain began selling only hormone-free milk a month ago. Now Wal-Mart has announced that its store brand milk will now come exclusively from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones. We're getting closer and closer to a full rejection of milk produced with recombinant bovine somatotropin, or rBGH.
Before you get too confused by these occurrences, realize that this is driven by financial reality, not corporate embracement of health or environmental issues. Customers are asking for milk free of genetically engineered hormones. Companies realize that consumers are boycotting dairy products made with this stuff so they're paying attention to how we are voting with our food dollars.
One of my favorite medical researchers Dr. Samuel Epstein from the Cancer Prevention Coalition has been leading the efforts to ban rBGH. He's found that milk from rBGH cows has substantially higher amounts of Insulin Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), which is a promoter of cancer tumors. This milk also has been found to contain higher amounts of antibiotics, bacteria, and pus.
